driving me mad

Looking for the name of a song and the recording artist that i have a fragment of, it is driving me mad trying to remember it. iI think it dates from somewhere in the early to mid sixties to the early 70s, the words i remember are

"a thousand violins couldn't make me hold your hand, and a million drums couldn't make me dance" If any one can help me i would be eternally gratefull. I have a fair knowledge of the music of the fifties and early sixties, and a very large collection of music to research in, and am happy to help anyone i can. Thanks in advance from an Aussie Vietnam Vet Ron

No problem. It's 'A Million Drums' by Tony Sheveton. From memory I think he was a UK singer, but the song was only a hit in Australia (early 1964)..

yep. This song is a forgotten classic of the early sixties. It is called A Million Drums and was released by Tony Sheveton amongst others.I sang in a band in the 80s in Melbourne and we covered it. Dont think many other bands have..

I'm positive the singer in the era you're thinking is Eddie Quinteros. But for the life of me can I comfirm it on the web. .

The question's already been answered Bill. The answer was Tony Sheveton. As a result of this thread, back in February I had an email from a relative of Sheveton's in the UK. Apparently, the correct spelling of the family name is Cheverton, but Tony changed it for the stage. 'A Million Drums' was his only hit (#49 in UK, #9 in Australia, 1964).

I don't know whether you've been contacted before about this but the song was called "A Million Drums" by Tony Sheveton. It was an Oriole of England recording and released in Australia by W&G records, Melbourne.

Ron,

"A Million Drums" by Tony Sheveton on W & G label (vinyl) in Australia 1965. You are in luck I have the track on a CD called "Hard To Get Hits" tack 4.
Google Tony Sheveton Bio and you should get info out of your computer. My contact number here in Adelaide is 83965778.

To be honest, if a million drums couldn't make her dance, I don't think all these websites are going to help much....

Well it's 4 years on and you probably have your answer = Tony Sheveton sings "A million drums". Like you i remembered this song with passion from my youth but couldn't find it for ages.Eventually it was an Aussie who found it for me!! It is available on CD as well. Tony S was a Pom but only scored with this in Australia..
