Original version of "Electric Slide"

Artist: Marcia Griffiths

Song: Electric Boogie (a.k.a. The Electric Slide)

Year: 1983

Click to hear song

{Her "Electric Boogie" with Bunny Wailer was a hit in the USA in 1989 - seven years after it was recorded - and even inspired its own dance - "The Electric Slide". She continues to make records that matter.}

Electric Boogie

As originally performed by Marcia Griffiths, a Jamaican born reggae singer, she sang backup and toured extensively with Bob Marley's band

Electric Boogie started the "Electric Slide" line dance craze in 1989

Strangely enough, despite it's enormous international popularity, the song never cracked the Top 40 charts

It's Electric!

You can't see it
It's electric!
You gotta feel it
It's electric!
Ooh, it's shakin'
It's electric!

Jiggle-a-mesa-cara
She's a pumpin' like a matic
She's a movin' like electric
She sure got the boogie

You gotta know it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie!
Now you can't hold it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie!
But you know it's there,
Yeah here there everywhere

I've got to move,
I'm going on a party ride
I've got to groove, groove, groove,
And from this music I just can't hide.

Are you comin' with me?
Come let me take you on a party ride
And I'll teach you, teach you, teach you
I'll teach you the electric slide

Some say it's mystic
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
You can't resist it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
You can't do without it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
Jiggle-a-mesa-cara she's a pumpin' like a matic
She's movin' like electric
She sure got the boogie

Don't wanna lose it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
But you can't choose it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
But you know it's there,
Yeah here there everywhere

I've got to move,
Come let me take you on a party ride
And I'll teach you, teach you, teach you
I'll teach you the electric slide

Some say it's mystic
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
You can't resist it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
You can't do without it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
Jiggle-a-mesa-cara she's a pumpin' like a matic
She's movin' like electric
She sure got the boogie

Don't wanna lose it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
But you can't choose it
It's electric
Boogie woogie, woogie
But you know it's there,
Yeah here there everywhere

You are incorrect Dan - the original record came out in 1976. The dance was created the following month by myself and can be found at my site

http://ric06379.tripod.com
By the way - the song is titled Electric Boogie and the dance is titled The Electric - somewhere along the way - people listened to the lyrics of the song and think that the dance is called The Electric Slide but The Slide is actually a variation of the original step.

I choreographed the dance in 1976 when The Electric Boogie was first released - can not remember if Marcia was the artist but have been told that it was impossible for me to have choreographed to this song - because the song was copyritten in 1981.. I told them - "Then why would I have called it 'The Electric' and everyone assumed because of the lyric - that it was called The Electric Slide" My Workmen's Comp hearing shows that 1) I tore my cartilage on 6/17/76 and 2) that it was torn teaching The Electric Slide. (see letter from L.L. at my homepage) .

no they are wrong in fact I heard there was a
version from the seventies that Grandmaster Slice
got their version from.. and that may be the one
that comes from your song.. tons of people have
been looking for your version even if it is to know
what it sounded like.

It sounded exactly like Marcia's 1986 version - the man who wrote the song wrote it for her - I know that - & I'm almost positive that the '86 version was a re-release of the earlier record. I have the 1990 CD release that I used for my video - Which is the same arangement as the original vinyl I used when I started it. The Problem is - In 1998, they changed the copyright laws - and everyone was scrambling to get their works registered - They said we had 20 years - and I never thought it was going to go this big - so I never worried about the registration until I started finding TV shows and movies using my copyrighted choreography in the years following 1998. That is when I found out that Line Dancer Magazine had it listed as the best linedance in the world - & now I understand that it stayed in that spot for 10 years.
I have been trying for years to contact Marcia - but I keep hitting stone walls - no one is letting me get close to her - so we can discuss it.

Hey, there's some sort of electric slide song that I heard at my school. It isn't the one y'all are talking about though it's one that goes like

Slide to the left
Slide to the right
One hop this time
One hop this time
Cha-cha real good
How low can you go
Can you go down low
Go down to the flo

Yea, tere's more but, I don't know how the rest goes. If anybody could email me ad tell me what this is called or, if it's actually called the same, if anyone finds the song, can you please tell me, thank you.
