Hi Roseanne, try 'O-o-h Child' by 5 Stairsteps (#8 in 1970). Lyrics follow:-

O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter
O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter

Someday we'll get it toghether and we'll get it undone
Someday when the world is much brighter
Someday we'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Someday when the world is much lighter

O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter
O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter

Someday we'll get it toghether and we'll get it undone
Someday when the world is much brighter
Someday we'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Someday when the world is much lighter

O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter
O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter

Someday we'll get it toghether and we'll get it undone
Someday when the world is much brighter
Someday we'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Someday when the world is much lighter

O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter
O-o-h child things are gonna get easier
O-o-h child things 'll get brighter
Right now right now

Pete, I think you hit the nail right on the head, but wasn't there a pretty popular remake done at one point?.

There was an "Ooh Child" remake done by The Wondermints in 1996 (they are often the backing band for Brian Wilson when he's on tour). If I recall, that one was slightly popular. The Five Stairsteps is probably the most well known though..

shay is right - there was a remake by Dino in 1993. Valerie Carter also did it in 1977, and I think the song was also featured in an Ally McBeal episode. So I guess it's been remade quite a few times..

If it's the Ally McBeal one you're thinking of, the artist is Vonda Shepard.

Well, I have the song, I also have a version made by Nina Simone..

Nina Simone's version is common but there's no reference to Marvin Gaye recording it on AMG. What's the source? Maybe it's a mislabelled mp3..

hello. You can find the song on a cd called: "Drew's Famous 70's Party Music" I have searched the net for referances, but I can only find the track list without the artists. I have downloaded the song, so there is a chance for mislabeling, but I have downloaded the same song at least 4 times, and always with the same artist name and cd referance. ( i searched for Ooh Child) Hope this helps your curiosity. Best regards Espen..

By the way, these are the artists/bands I know have made a version of this song:
* Beth Orton
* Chilites
* Destiny's Child & Cyndi Lauper (live)
* Molly Johnson (combo of Ooh Child & Redemtion song)
* The Posies
* Wondermints
* Five Stairsteps (original)
* nice & smooth (chorus sample)
* Nina Simone
* Dee Dee Sharp (The Philly Sound-Disc 3 of 3)
* Bruce Ruffin
* Lenny Williams
* Laura Nyro
* Dino
* Valerie Carter
* Vonda Sheppard
* Marvin Gaye (That's 17 in total)

There is probably a few more, but these are the ones I know about. I LOVE this song, so I have done some research about it, the first time I heard it was in the movie "Boyz n the hood".
And thanks Pete.

Thanks Espen. Now you can add Dino, Valerie Carter and Vonda Shepard to the list. Maybe you can make a whole CD of different versions of 'O-o-h Child'!.

Valerie Carter's Ooh Child is eerily forgotten. I never heard the original 1970 version until after I had heard Valerie Carter's 1977 recording. I recall hers being played a lot on radio but now it is as if there is an amnesia about her version. Weird..
