Giant Steps is a seven piece ska band from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Members of Giant Steps include Otto Barthel (guitar and vocals), Paul Blakey
(baritone sax), Dan Penick (trombone), Tom Siegel (trumpet and vocals),
Mike Silva (alto sax, tenor sax, congos and vocals), Brad Spalding (bass and
vocals) and Andrew Squire (drums).
The band has been playing together in its present form since September
1994, developing a following of regional skankers. Giant Steps' local
reputation and draw has allowed them to be billed with such acts as the
Scofflaws, the Pietasters, Selecter, Fishbone, Mustard Plug, Dread Zeppelin,
the Toasters, Let's Go Bowling, Buck-O-Nine, the Skeletones, No Doubt and
MU330. In March of 1996, Giant Step's first full-length CD entitled
Technicolor was released.
Giant Steps' sound is the result of a combination of the musical influences
of various band members, and could be categorized as modern ska. Some
consider Giant Steps' music to be traditional. It is open to debate,
however, since their music is high energy.
