In 1974, Cameo formed, touring often with Parliament and Funkadelic. Although Cameo sounded like the hard funk of George Clinton, the band started to play around with their sound slightly in the 1970's and 1980's.
Cameo discovered its style - the synth - with the title track to their album entitled "She's Strange," hinting at what was to come. Cameo recorded a funk classic with Word Up, a bass driven and synth heavy album, enabling the band to move into the main stream. "Word Up" climbed into the Top Ten on the pop charts.
Cameo reached its pinnacle with Word Up. While the group continued to record and tour into the 1990's, their style became formulaic, stemming from the fact that robotic funk and synthesizers overwhelmed their later records.
