In 1981, songwriter Chrissie Amphlett, guitarist Mark McEntree and bassist Rick Grossman formed the Divinyls in Sydney. Their first mini-album was written for the 1982 film Monkey Grip, and produced
the Australian Top 10 single "Boys In Town" as well as the ballad "Only the Lonely."
The band signed with the UK label Chrysalis Records. The first album, entitled Desperate, was a hit in Australia. Several hit singles and extensive touring preceded What A Life, which was well-received in 1985. More recent work - save for the single "Pleasure and Pain" - paled in
comparison to the band's earlier work.
In 1988, the band became a duo, when Grossman left to join Hoodoo Gurus. The Divinyls underwent a revival with the single "I Touch Myself," which reached the Top 10 in the U.K. in
1991.
