In 1980, Bow Wow Wow was formed in London, England by former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. Members of the band included David Barbe (drums), Matthew Ashman and Lee Gorman (bass).
The trio came together to back McLaren’s protégé, a Burmese girl named Annabella Lwin. McLaren discovered her singing in a dry cleaners in north London.
Bow Wow Wow enjoyed only limited success with EMI Records. And so, like the Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow sought a new record company. Following an agreement with RCA Records, McLaren promoted the band with publicity stunts, giving rise to discussion of pedophiliac pop.
Annabella appeared with her head shaven into a Mohican syle. She appeared in tribal clothing, as well. Controversy erupted when Annabella was photographed semi-nude on an album sleeve.
Bow Wow Wow’s song entitled “Go Wild In the Country” was a frenetic exhibit. The band’s hit “I Want Candy” then reached the Top 10.
By then, however, McLaren had lost control of the band. In 1983, Bow Wow Wow disbanded.
